Model Planes Required To Carry Insurance?

Vero Beach has decided that people who want to fly model airplanes there must carry insurance.

Should this be a requirement for all model airplane enthusiasts or is it just a way to try to shut model airplane flying down completely?

Surprisingly, a local model airplane club in Vero Beach, The Quiet Birds, has approved the ordinance and each of its members now has at least a 2.5 million dollar liability policy.

At first glance, it seems like a ridiculous requirement, but it only takes one accident to make it seem like a good idea after all, and, if nothing else, maybe it will cut down on those who show a total disregard for others in the area where they are flying.

If we want to continue to have good places to fly, we modelers have step up and take responsibility for doing it safely and with as little disruption to other activities and people as possible.

Why not take a few minutes this week to check out liability insurance for your model airplane with your insurance agent? It may be cheaper than you think.
